Piercing Aftercare - CaMel Trails Tattoo & Body Piercing in Barrie, Ontario
General Piercing Aftercare Instructions
When we heal piercings our body produces a plasma that seeps out around the edge of the jewelry and creates a “crust” This “crust” must be softened before you move your new piercing or it can rip your skin!! These tears will allows bacteria an opportunity to infect you!
Do all your shower things first so the “crust” that has formed around the piercing can become soft from the water. Gently wash off your piercing and run it under the water to remove any icky stuff.
When you get out of the shower spray/q tip your piercing with the Bactine, moving your piercing back and forth so that the Bactine gets inside the hole.
NOW PLEASE LEAVE IT ALONE.. as the biggest cause of infections are your grubby little fingers!!
If you want to you can apply some Bactine halfway through the day to the outside of the piercing but DO NOT MOVE IT ..( That crust will not be soft and rip your skin which allows bacteria an opportunity to infect you!)
Before bed you must clean one more time. If you don't want to shower place either a shot glass with water or a wet folded paper towel over your piercing to soften that crust and then clean and Bactine!
Take Ibuprofen (Advil) every 4 hours for a few days to help decrease the initial swelling.
DO NOT have contact with saliva or any other body fluids until the piercing is totally healed.
DO NOT soak in water until the piercing is healed.
DO NOT take out the Jewelry if it looks or feels infected. Please contact your piercer for advice. Removing the Jewelry can trap an infection inside and complicate the situation immensely.
DO NOT let anyone else touch your piercing.
ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE TOUCHING YOUR PIERCING

WHAT IS NORMAL??
*Bleeding, bruising, discoloration and/or swelling are not uncommon for a few days,
*some tenderness or discomfort in the area of a new piercing is not unusual. During healing there may be some itching.
*It is normal to have secretions of a fluid which is fairly liquid, whitish-yellow in color and forms a crust on the Jewelry at the openings of the piercing. This is not pus, but indicates a healing piercing.
*Piercings may have a tendency to have a series of ups and downs during healing by seeming healed and then regressing. Try to be patient, and do keep cleaning during the entire 8-10 week initial healing time, even if the piercing seems healed sooner.
*Tightness is normal. Do not expect Jewelry to swing freely in most body piercings, even after they are thoroughly healed.
Oral Piercing Aftercare Instructions
*Rinse your mouth with Sea Salt water (Diluted original Listerine)3 times a day and after you smoke, eat or drink anything. The only exception is bottled water.
*Take Ibuprofen (Advil) every 4 hours for a few days to help decrease the initial swelling.
*Regularly check the ball on the jewelry for tightness.
*Rest is key to quick healing. The less you play with it, stick it out, chew on it, etc., the faster it will heal.
*DO NOT have contact with foreign body fluids for at least one month.
It is recommended that you downsize to a shorter barbell for tongues after one month.
*Use common sense when eating. Eat what's comfortable and take time to get used to jewelry in your mouth.
*DO NOT smoke, or at least cut way down. Smoking lengthens healing time considerably.
*DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL!! Alcohol will prolong healing, increase swelling, and may cause serious health risks.

Genital Aftercare Instructions
Body piercings need to be cleaned twice daily, every day, for 8 to 10 weeks. Most people clean morning and night, in the shower. Do not clean with your liquid soap product more often than twice a day as this can irritate your piercing, and possibly delay your healing.
Before cleanings wash hands thoroughly with liquid antibacterial soap and hot water. If you wish, you may wear disposable latex or vinyl gloves and/or also use a hand sanitizing gel. Never, ever touch healing piercings with dirty hands. This is vital for avoiding infections.
Take Ibuprofen (Advil) every 4 hours for a few days to help decrease the initial swelling.
Prepare the area for the cleansing by rinsing or soaking with warm water and be sure to remove any stubborn crust using a cotton swab and warm water. Never pick with fingernails! This step is very important for your comfort.
Apply a small handful of cleaning solution to the area with your clean hands. Cleanse the area and the jewelry, and gently rotate the jewelry back and forth a few times to work the solution to the inside of the piercing. (You do not need to rotate your jewelry during the first few cleanings.)
Allow the solution to cleanse there for a minute or so. You may bathe normally, just don't purposely work anything other than the cleanser onto the inside of the piercing.
Rinse the area thoroughly under running water, while rotating the jewelry back and forth to completely remove cleanser residue from the inside and outside of the piercing.
Gently pat dry with disposable paper products such as gauze or tissues, as cloth towels can harbor bacteria.
Sexual activity is not prohibited, but must be gentle & hygienic. Listen to your body! If something feels sore, it means you need to ease up or stop for the time being.
Use condoms and dental dams for all sexual contact during healing to prevent sharing of bodily fluids. This is required even if you are in a monogamous relationship.
It is mandatory for your health and safety during the entire minimum 8-10 weeks initial healing time.
Avoid condoms and lubricants containing Nonoxynol 9 as it is very strong and can irritate healing piercings. Use water-based lubricants such as KY jelly.
